Missione di ricognizione per la mastodontica astronave "Nostromo", l'equipaggio viaggia in "letargo" indotto ma viene bruscamente svegliato. Si pensa che il motivo del risveglio sia l'estrema vicinanza del pianeta terra ma non è così (purtroppo); un segnale di S.O.S viene inviato da un pianeta sconosciuto, la Nostromo atterra.
Due volontari escono dall'astronave per esplorare il pianeta nelle immediate vicinanze, e rinvengono una struttura indefinibile, gigantesca, aliena.
Uno degli astronauti, introdottosi nella navicella "straniera" viene improvvisamente attaccato da una creatura sconosciuta..è l'inizio di un incubo senza fine.
