All the files here range from standard to blazing high quality mp3 files. As Always, all the 320vbr albums were converted via dbPowerAMP from LOSSLESS sources using the Alt Preset Extreme Setting. The sources of the albums include bittorrent, emule+, soulseek, DC++ (and my personal collection) and have all been checked and double-checked for consistency (i.e. they are all whole albums as opposed to the kazaa gathering method), and none seem to be lossy to lossy transcodes. All Folders have been labelled with as much info as possible, and the screenshot shows them off, so you know exactly what you're downloading when you decide to. Lastly, each pack (3 more to go) will be roughly about the same size as this one, and I've set them to 4 gigs to allow for easy burn to 1 DVD or 6 CDS. Props for this idea should go to staremi of the demonoid boards

The Bio

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

http://suprfile.com/src/1/7gpigqc/folderii.jpg

The wild ride of the most romanticized icon in jazz is thrillingly recounted in this first major biography.

From his emergence in the 1950swhen an uncannily beautiful young man from Oklahoma appeared on the West Coast to become, seemingly overnight, the prince of cool jazzuntil his violent, drug-related death in Amsterdam in 1988, Chet Baker lived a life that has become an American myth. Now, drawing on hundreds of interviews and previously untapped sources, James Gavin gives a hair-raising account of the trumpeters dark journey.

The story of Bakers demisea heretofore unsolved riddleis revealed here at last. So is the truth behind his tormented childhood, the pain of which haunted his entire life. Gavin explores the birth of the melancholy trumpet playing, the fragile tenor voice, and the otherworldly personal aura that catapulted Baker to fame. Sexy, angelic, needy, and forbidding all at once, Baker became known as the James Dean of jazz. Like Dean, he struck a note of menace in the staid fifties: behind his ultra cool, handsome faade lay something ominous, unspoken. The mystery drove both sexes crazy. But his only real romance, apart from music, was with drugs. And in mesmerizing detail, Gavin narrates the harrowing spiral of dependency down which Baker tumbled, dragging with him those who dared get close.

From his golden promise to his eventual destruction, Bakers life mirrored Americas fall from postwar innocence. Deep in a Dream is the portrait of a musician whose singular artistry and mystique have never lost their power to enchant and seduce us.

Jazzman Baker sang and played trumpet like a dream and lived a nightmare, thanks to a heroin habit that wreaked havoc on his soul and on the lives of those around him. Gavin's in-depth bio is definitive, tracing Baker's career and his art in detail. Yet the volume feels like it belongs on the shelf next to such harrowing addiction tomes as William Burroughs' Junky and Art Pepper's Straight Life. Whether you read it as a character study of a titanic, troubled musician or as a lurid cautionary tale, Dream is a haunting prose poem that's every bit as affecting as one of Baker's solos. Reviewed by Tom Sincla

Popular cool-toned trumpeter and a fragile singer whose charisma made up for his limited voice, with his good looks Chet Baker probably could have been a movie star. Instead he became a drug addict in the mid-'50s and had an extremely erratic lifestyle with horrific episodes alternating with some wonderful musical moments.

Chet Baker certainly started out on top. After getting out of the Army, he gigged with Charlie Parker on the West Coast in 1952 and then joined the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, a pianoless unit that soon became among the most popular in jazz. After Mulligan was jailed for his own drug problems, Baker (who had helped make "My Funny Valentine" into a hit) formed a quartet with pianist Russ Freeman. He began to win polls on both trumpet and vocals, toured Europe in 1955 and seemed on his way to a lucrative career. But by 1960 Baker was in an Italian jail and, although he made a few worthy recordings in the '60s, by the end of the decade his teeth had been knocked out after a botched drug deal and he was out of music.

Against all odds Chet Baker made a gradual comeback in the 1970s. Although Baker recorded far too much during his final 15 years, his nomadic lifestyle (never kicking drugs and essentially wandering all over Europe) was unstable and his occasional vocals (always an acquired taste) were generally poor, his trumpet playing actually improved as the decade progressed. In fact despite everything, Chet Baker was still in his musical prime when he fell out of a second story window (pushed or slipped?) to his death in 1988. He remains one of the great cult figures of jazz. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

[1958] - Chet Baker - Chet Baker in New York [320vbr]

http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/050/59464.jpg

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Al Haig (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums). Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York in September 1958. Originally released on Riverside (1119). Includes original liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1988, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Chet Baker could hang just as well as the cats back East, as he proves on the classic CHET BAKER IN NEW YORK. To quell the East vs. West debate, Baker joined New York all-stars like Johnny Griffin, Al Haig, and the Miles Davis rhythm team of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones for a rousing session that is one for the history books. Listening to these seven standards, there's little doubt that this cross-pollination was a successful experiment. Baker, sticking to trumpet, sounds just as smooth and laid back as usual. From brisk numbers such as "Hotel 49" to blue ballads such as "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," the trumpeter always projects his cool image, only now with a subtle urging from his East Coast sidemen. Griffin is complimentary to the leader, and shines on tasty solo spots such as Benny Golson's swinging opener "Fair Weather." Chambers and Jones get a chance to record a very different take of Davis' classic "Solar," here featuring Baker's velvety wanderings at a mid-tempo lope. Other choice cuts in this experiment include the bouncing "When Lights Are Low" and Benny Goodman's lazily swinging "Soft Winds."

[1958] - Chet Baker - Chet Baker Introduces Johnny Pace [160cbr]

http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/050/59455.jpg

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Johnny Pace (vocals); Herbie Mann (flute); Joe Berle (piano); Jimmie Burke (bass); Philly Joe Jones, Ed Thigpen (drums). Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on December 23, 29 & 30, 1958. Originally released on Riverside (12-292). Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Known as a notable vocalist himself, Chet Baker presents vocalist Johnny Pace on this set of popular standards for Riverside in 1958. Also making a significant contribution is flautist Herbie Mann, who adds an airy texture to the standard jazz accompaniment. Baker is restrained and supportive of Pace's Sinatra-like vocals, filling up the holes between phrases along with contributing some tasty solo spots. Pace's rich voice is ideal for such classic ballads as "Crazy, She Calls Me," "This is Always," and "Yesterdays," although Chet Baker fans may be anxious to hear the trumpeter sing a few lines of his own. Still, it's good to hear Baker's trumpet interleaved with a vocalist since his own vocal records usually gave us either one or the other. More spirited tracks such as the opening "All or Nothing At All" and "The Way You Look Tonight" get a little schmaltzy, with a grooving counterbalance that propels the tunes to greater than the sum of their parts. INTRODUCES JOHNNY PACE is a unique addition to the Chet Baker catalog.

Hardly as angst-ridden as Chet Baker's legend would suggest, 1958's It Could Happen to You is Baker still riding high, a star winsomely crooning some favorite standards over subtle accompaniment by small groups whose members include pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Sam Jones, and the unstoppable Philly Joe Jones on drums. Baker's boyish moods are perfect for the likes of "How Long Has This Been Going On?," "You're Driving Me Crazy," and (believe it) "Everything Happens to Me." --Rickey Wright

[1959] - Chet Baker - Plays The Best Of Lerner & Loewe [320cbr]

http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/050/59485.jpg

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Zoot Sims (alto & tenor saxophones); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Herbie Mann (flute); Bill Evans, Bob Corwin (piano); Earl May (bass); Clifford Jarvis (drums). Recorded in New York, New York on July 21 & 22, 1959. Originally released on Riverside (1152). Includes original liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1984, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). On this 1959 release Chet Baker and company perform intimate renditions of such memorable tunes as "I Could Have Danced all Night," from My Fair Lady, and "Almost Like Being in Love," from Brigadoon. Perhaps the most endearing selection on the album is the haunting ballad, "I Talk to the Trees," from Paint Your Wagon, which features a melancholy solo from Baker, and a soft-spoken but gritty tenor solo by the great Zoot Sims. "Show Me" (also from My Fair Lady), is marked by the sparse yet melodic jabs of the great pianist Bill Evans. Baker himself improvises in an uncharacteristically outspoken manner on this track, and Herbie Mann and Zoot Sims both perform blazing solos on flute and alto sax respectively. Teen drummer Clifford Jarvis shines on all eight tracks, playing with the maturity of one more than twice his age. On this downbeat set, Baker and troupe add charm, even potency, to these Lerner and Loewe chestnuts.

[1959] - Chet Baker In Milan [320vbr] [192cbr]

http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/050/59463.jpg

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Clauco Masetti (alto saxophone); Gianno Basso (tenor saxophone); Renato Sellani (piano); Franco Serri (bass); Gene Victory (drums). Recorded in Milan, Italy in October 1959. Originally released on Jazzland (18). Includes original liner notes by Peter Drew. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1989, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). You would never know this set was recorded entirely in Italy with Italian jazz musicians supporting Chet Baker if you didn't read the liner notes. Indeed, it sounds as if Baker gathered with his usual West Coast gang on some sunny California afternoon to swing through some cool tunes. Yet, considering that American jazz has always been so widely admired in Europe since its introduction in the early days of the swing era, it is not surprising that these foreign musicians would expertly pick up the language and communicate it with the utmost articulation. For Baker, it was surely a treat to be able to stop briefly during his travels through Europe and record these sides with such accomplished players who knew and admired his music so well. As a result, great standards like "Lady Bird," "Tune Up," "Pent Up House," and "My Old Flame" flow effortlessly out of Baker's horn in a quintessential display of his "cool" style. Listeners should take this session like a welcomed postcard from a friend abroad; everything is fine, wish you were here.

Personnel includes: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet). Recorded in Milan, Italy in October 1959. Originally released on Jazzland (921). Includes liner notes by Peter Drew. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). If you're a romantic with a yen for lush and dreamy music, WITH FIFTY ITALIAN STRINGS is the album for you. Chet Baker's trumpet soliloquizes over the aforementioned strings in carefree yet deliberate phrases. His voice glides smoothly and effortlessly over the legato accompaniment, while the arrangements are never too dense, weighty or dramatic. Very few jazz musicians have the ability to capture love and loss like Baker. On "Goodbye," the music becomes a slow dirge, with the trumpeter leading the procession; it's as if he's eulogizing his own heartbreak with sudden flourishes and tearful long tones. However, the pangs of love are best represented on "Deep In a Dream," where Baker likens his loneliness to a cigarette burning his fingers. "My hand doesn't hurt, but there's pain in my heart," he croons. WITH FIFTY ITALIAN STRINGS features Baker in a tranquil and cozy setting. Midtempo tunes such as "The Song Is You," round out the album with blissful, sunny lyrics. Saxophones, trombones, harp, flute and oboe also add color to the set's texture and mood.

[1961] - Piero Umiliani Ft. Chet Baker - Italian Movies [320vbr]

http://suprfile.com/src/1/7ft9dq8/folderSmall.jpg

Chet paired with Umiliani in the late fifties and early sixties for 2 movie soundtracks. Selected clips from these sessions are heard here. Sentirsi Solo is a stand-out, with Chet playing his opening fanfare loud and high. The rest is mostly forgettable movie music. Chet does not play on the last 2 tracks.

[1962] - Chet Baker - Somewhere Over The Rainbow [192vbr]

http://www.mukebox.com/pics/al/00/978.jpg

Taken from Chet Is Back!, recorded in Italy in 1962, Somewhere Over the Rainbow features Baker at his finest, and is an excellent introduction to the musician's non-vocal work. As is the case with most Baker albums, Somewhere Over the Rainbow feels like a quickly put-together session recording. The material is all standard jazz repertoire, played in a no-frills format, without specific arrangements or endings. It is the musicianship here that is the main attraction. Baker has rarely sounded better; his technique is in top shape, and his solos are textbook examples of lyrical bop playing. Baker, as was not always the case throughout his career, surrounds himself on Somewhere Over the Rainbow with strong and supportive sidemen. Guitarist Rene Thomas, underrecorded throughout his career, becomes one of the highlights of the session, and makes the album a must-have for bop guitar enthusiasts. Tune selection is surprisingly upbeat for a Baker recording. ~ Dan Cross, All Music Guide

[1962] - Chet Baker - The Italian Sessions [192cbr]

http://www.classicjazzcorner.com/scans/chet_baker_italian_sessions.jpg

Throughout the 1950s Chet Baker gained fame as a quiet, low-register trumpeter with a cool tone and a relaxed style. This CD should therefore be a major surprise to listeners who believe he was incapable of playing heated material, or of utilizing the upper register of his horn. Assisted by a fine European sextet (including Bobby Jaspar on tenor and flute and guitarist Rene Thomas), Baker is heard in peak form throughout this memorable and frequently exciting bop date. [1962] - Chet Baker Sextet - Chet Is Back [320vbr]

http://homepage3.nifty.com/mrmanri/BobbyJaspar/ChetIsBack.jpg

After a two year absence from the studio (most of that time spent in an Italian jail) Chet's return could not have been more triumphant. He quiets all notions that he is a "has been" with his fiery delivery as he swings with a great Italian band. His version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow is one of the prettiest things you'll ever hear. This is arguably his best recording of the 1960's.

In 2003, RCA released this recording on CD with the original cover and name (after years of issuing The Italian Sessions). The new release features extensive liner notes, but best of all, it includes 4 very rare Italian recordings from 1962. That year Chet met with Ennio Morricone and they recorded 4 of Chet's own compositions (written during his jail term) for 2 Italian EP's. The tunes are a little heavily-orchestrated, but it proved that Chet could write some nice tunes when he put his mind to it.

[1964] - Chet Baker - Stella By Starlight [320vbr]

http://chetbakertribute.com/cb_coverart/stella.jpg

Radio recording from 1964 Italian performance. The sound quality is muddy, but Chet's playing is crisp and inspired. After two Baker standards (My Funny Valentine and the title tune) we get to hear some tunes not usually associated with Chet, such as the swinging Serpent's Tooth and When Will The Blues Leave. Theme For Freddy is an unusual, but pretty tune penned by Chet.

http://image.listen.com/img/170x170/2/5/5/2/562552_170x170.jpg

Despite it's pretentious title, this was a very important album for Chet Baker. It marked his return to the states after a long stay in Europe that included a stint in an Italian prison. This was the beginning of a brief, but spectacular run of recordings that included Baby Breeze, Baker's Holiday, and the Prestige recordings of 1965. Similar to Baby Breeze, this album has a nice mixture of bop and ballads. Chet's still getting used to his new flugelhorn, but with the help of an excellent band, he shines.

http://image.listen.com/img/170x170/5/8/0/3/513085_170x170.jpg

Along with "Baby Breeze", this recording features some of Chet's last great vocal work. He's also seems to have mastered the Flugelhorn after struggling a little in earlier recordings. Billie Holiday's mostly melancholy material was a good fit for Chet, and the lush, Nelson Riddle - style arrangements give this album a full sound. The drummer on this session was the great Connie Kay, of The Modern Jazz Quartet.

For 3 amazing days in August, 1965, Chet laid down 32 tracks for Prestige. He's backed by an experienced band featuring George Coleman (who played in Miles Davis' band) on Tenor Sax. Baker does surprising well, considering he's working with unfamiliar musicians and mostly original material , lots of hard-bop tunes penned by Richard Carpenter and Tadd Dameron. The LP titles and art work were a blatant rip-off of similarly-packaged Miles Davis recordings, such as Walkin' and Workin'. This would Chet's last great studio work until with 1974 comeback.

The sessions were released on 3 CD's in 1996: On A Misty Night, Stairway to the Stars,

[1965] - Joe Pass Ft. Chet Baker - A Sign Of The Times [224cbr]

http://tralfaz-archives.com/coverart/P/pass_signf.jpg

Sometimes smooth, sometimes schmaltzy, but never boring. Joe Pass has been creating new ways of playing the guitar for decades. This outing has him collaborating with Chet Baker and a vocal chorus. Joe interprets film scores, the Beatles and other pieces of music and makes his own mark upon them. Honestly, I could live without the vocal chorus, but the rest of the music is worth the effort. And the lovely birds on the cover are in their finest sixties frocks.

[1965] - The Mariachi Brass Band Ft. C.B. - A Taste Of Tequila [224cbr]

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s69179.jpg

In the mid-sixties, jazz had taken a back seat to rock and roll. Many jazz performers, desperate for work recorded "pop" albums, cashing in on whatever fad was hot in the music world. Chet's "Mariachi Brass" LP's mimicked on the then-hot Herb Alpert and Tijuana Brass sound. Just like Alpert's LP's, they even came complete with cover art featuring cheesy photos of beautiful models. Chet plays flugelhorn (as he did for most of his recordings around '64-66), but the album reverse photos show pictures of him playing trumpet. Carol Baker mentioned in this interview that Chet hated these recordings, but he had to support his family. Oddly, they sold well, and the royalties came in. It is unfortunate that he and his family didn't get royalties from many of his great recordings. All four sound about the same: heavy-handed arrangements featuring trumpet lines playing the melody in unison. These tunes become even more unbearable when you have songs that have no Latin flavor at all (Danke Schoen?!) and force them into these ridiculous arrangements. This is never so apparent than in the massacre of Glenn Miller tunes on In The Mood.

These LP's were issued on Dick Bock's "World Pacific" label, an offshoot of the Pacific Jazz.. These recordings have never been issued on CD.

[1966] - Bud Shank - California Dreamin [320cbr]

http://suprfile.com/src/1/7gcajuf/folderii.jpg

More World Pacific commercial albums wasting the talents of some jazz greats. Michelle and California Dreamin' feature boring renditions of the day's big hits by The Beatles. The Byrds, The Mamas and the Papas, and more. Michelle was actually a big seller, it reached #54 on the charts in 1966. Chet and Bud do some pretty playing on "Petite Fleur", "Imprevu" and "The End of The World". Throughout these albums you can still hear a great solo here and there buried in the heavy-handed arrangements and obtrusive background vocals.

Brazil! Brazil! Brazil! was Chet's first major recording after his infamous 1966 beating that damaged his remaining teeth. Apparently, he was really struggling that day, he manages only a few lines on one cut ("Summer Samba"). The rest of the LP is some better-than-usual World Pacific commercial material.

Magical Mystery was Shank and Baker's last World Pacific collaboration. Mostly bland, sometimes bizarre arrangements of Beatle's tunes. Chet can be heard only occasionally, as he shares time with Gary Barone on flugelhorn.

These LP's were issued on Dick Bock's "World Pacific" label, an offshoot of the Pacific Jazz.. These recordings have never been issued on CD.

[1966] - Chet Baker - Live At Gaetano's - Live At Pueblo, Colorado [320cbr]

http://chetbakertribute.com/cb_coverart/gaetanos.jpg

This 1966 Pueblo concert can be found on several labels. Baker and Urso sound strong, and it somewhat makes up for the extremely poor recording quality. It's hard to believe this concert was recorded the same year as all of those terrible Mariachi Band and Carmel Strings albums. This is probably Baker's last great recording until his 1974 comeback. It's also our last opportunity to hear that beautiful voice before it reappeared in the 1970's scarred by cigarettes and drugs.

[1966] - Chet Baker & The Carmel Strings - Quietly, There [224cbr]

http://suprfile.com/src/1/7gcjvmb/folderii.jpg

Here are two forgettable commercial albums with The Carmel Strings. This is easy listening "elevator music", and in no way resembles jazz. But if you read John Tynan's (he was a writer for DownBeat Jazz Magazine) liner notes on Quietly There, he evokes the names of Miles Davis and Stan Getz is if this were a legitimate jazz recording. On both of the Carmel Strings recordings, there are a few pretty ballads like The Ballad Of The Sad Young Men that have some good solos, but they are buried in heavy strings and cooing singers. Most of the time, the up-beat tunes can be quite laughable. Chet's playing is workman-like, although you can occasionally hear him throw in a nice little solo to try to save the song.

I have heard that while in the Italian prison, Chet's jailors made him play Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White over and over again until he was sick of it. I guess his punishment continued as he recorded it with the Carmel Strings.

[1966] - The Mariachi Brass Band Ft. C.B. - Double Shot [320cbr]

http://suprfile.com/src/1/7gcoqvq/folderii.jpg

The Mariachi Brass! Featuring Chet Baker

[1967] - Bud Shank Ft. Chet Baker - Magical Mystery [244cbr]

http://suprfile.com/src/1/7glzt2f/folder.jpg

This is usually considered Baker's worst album. It was recorded when Chet's embouchure was in terrible shape. It is sad to hear Chet struggle to get a good sound out of his horn. At the same time, the organ-laden arrangements are quite laughable. At times, the over-dubbing is so bad, it sounds as if two completely different songs are being played simultaneously.

The songs themselves are not terrible, most are simple, pretty tunes written by comedian Steve Allen. Allen was a big fan of Baker, he had him on his variety show several times in the 60's. This was his way of helping Chet get his career started again. This recording inexplicably keeps getting re-issued on CD.

[1970] - Chet Baker - Blood, Chet And Tears [320vbr]

http://bandtoband.com/images/covers/144/12161.gif

At first, this would seem like the usual commercial garbage similar to Chet's previous collaborations with Joe Pass and Bud Shank. But here Chet plays a lot more, and much better here than he did on those recordings from 1965 to 1967. However, he is buried in some outrageously heavy arrangements. Sometimes you wonder if the producer was trying to see how many instrumental tracks he could layer on at once.

This is by no means a jazz album. Even Albert's House was jazzier than this one. But there are a few fun tunes such as "Vehicle", "When I Die", and "You've Made Me So Very Happy". Chet sings on "Something", he has trouble staying on key, but he gets through it. His vocal on "Come Saturday Morning" gets so buried in the arrangement you can barely hear him. Consider this LP a "guilty pleasure" for Chet fans.

A highly improvisational concert reuniting Baker and Konitz. Sometimes the improvisation gets out of hand, and they step on each other's solos. Overall it is just a raw, swinging set. There seemed to be some problems with the microphones because although Konitz sounds fine, Baker sounds like he's playing off stage somewhere.

[1974] - Chet baker & Gerry Mulligan at the Carnegie Hall Concert [320vbr]

http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/050/59524.jpg

CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT is a compilation of material from the original CTI releases: "Carnegie Hall Concerts, Volume 1 & 2". Personnel includes: Chet Baker (trumpet); Gerry Mulligan (saxophone); Dave Samuels (vibraphone); Bob James (keyboards); John Scofield (guitar); Ron Carter (bass); Harvey Mason (drums). This 1974 release finds Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker together in a live setting. The two jazz paragons hadn't worked together in 10 years, but from the first downbeat it's evident that they still possess the musical rapport they'd developed as young men. Taking the West Coast by storm 22 years earlier with their famed pianoless quartet, Mulligan and Baker had the keen ability to work almost as one performer. This is clearly evident on "Bernie's Tune," where they trade licks on the tune's bridge in articulate, fluid gestures, almost as one player. Despite their substance abuse, Baker and Mulligan grew as improvisers over many years performing on concert stages and in jazz clubs. This album is testament to their ability to adapt and embrace modern jazz stylings. When they hark back to their roots on compositions such as "My Funny Valentine" and "Line For Lyons," they play with a kind of casual, relaxed swing indicative of the '50s cool jazz feel they helped create.

[1975] - Jim Hall Ft. Chet Baker - Concierto [320vbr]

http://suprfile.com/src/1/7gmqxlj/folderii.jpg

Personnel: Jim Hall (guitar); Don Sebesky (conductor); Paul Desmond (alto saxophone); Chet Baker (trumpet); Roland Hanna (piano); Ron Carter (bass); Steve Gadd (drums). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Didier C. Deutsch. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 16 & 23, 1975. Includes liner notes by Steve Futterman. Digitally remastered by Tom Ruff (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Guitarist Jim Hall is the sort of musician who displays such technical expertise, imaginative conception, and elegance of line and phrase that almost any recording of his is worth hearing. Still, CONCIERTO ranks among the best albums of his superb catalogue. For starters, the personnel here is a jazz lover's dream come true. Paul Desmond (saxophone), Chet Baker (trumpet), Roland Hanna (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Steve Gadd (drums) are on board, creating--along with Hall--one of the highest profile lineups ever put to tape. Yet CONCIERTO is not about star power and showboating. As subtle, nuanced, and considered as any of Hall's output, CONCIERTO's ensemble playing demonstrates great group sensitivity and interplay, giving precedence to mood and atmosphere over powerhouse soloing. Conductor and arranger Don Sebesky evinces a chamber ambience from the sextet on "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," the smoky "The Answer Is Yes," and the Hall centerpiece "Concierto de Aranjuez."

As with the album that did get released, there's a focus here that's a nice change from some of Baker's looser European material of later years -- a sense of Chet's presence and phrasing that comes through quite strongly, and which is supported here by a sensitive group of top-shelf accompanists who include Paul Desmond, Kenny Barron, Tony Williams, and Ron Carter.

You get the feeling that this is not going to be one of Chet's better recordings when it opens with some ear-splitting microphone feedback. Chet's playing is sloppy throughout, and the songs seem to run a little too long. Markowitz's solos make this one listenable, but you a better off hearing the same line up on Live At Nick's and Broken Wing, recorded in the weeks to follow. They sounded much better then.

Considering his erratic lifestyle, it is surprising how many good records Chet Baker made during his final 15 years. This quartet outing with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Scott Lee and drummer Jeff Brillinger has been greatly expanded in its CD reissue. Four songs (including a 17-minute version of Wayne Shorter's obscure "Beautiful Black Eyes") are joined by previously unreleased and fairly long versions of "I Remember You" and "Love for Sale." The quiet but swinging music is quite enjoyable and finds Baker in fine form.

[1978] - Chet Baker - The Legacy Iv-Oh You Crazy Moon [128cbr]

http://suprfile.com/src/1/7gofuxd/folder.jpg

Trumpeter Chet Baker became known in the 1950s as one of the "cool cats." His lyrical blowing, distinguished by a seemingly endless melodic inventiveness and a dark, calm tone, matured over the years and reached its artistic peak in the 70s and 80s. When Baker came to Europe in 1978, he had just released several albums for CTI and A&M and was full of energy and selfconfidence. Assisted by his fine American tour band including the fantastic Phil Markowitz on piano, Baker delivered an exceptional radio show for the SDR in Stuttgart, Germany at the end of the year.

The program starts with "The Touch Of Your Lips," a tune that shows that Baker was also a dedicated, crafty singer and passionate scat artist. As a trumpeter, he especially shines in such exquisite tunes as Wayne Shorter's bossa melody Beautiful Black Eyes," Van Heusen's "Oh You Crazy Moon" (vintage 1939) or Michel Legrand's "Once Upon A Summertime." For a conclusion Baker delivers another deeply moving version of "My Funny Valentine," the song that almost was his trademark. This Rodgers-Hart ballad became a well-known jazz standard only after the young Baker had recorded it with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligans quartet in 1952. It was the most often demanded song in Baker's repertoire.

Fifteen years after Chet Baker's untimely death in Amsterdam, this beautifully balanced album is a worthy memorial for one of the greatest and most unmistakable improvisers in jazz.
