Painkiller : 50th Birthday Celebration Volume Twelve 292kbs
Cat. # 5012
Released Sep 2005
cd time - 43:16
US Price $15.00

A powerful and breathtaking meeting of masters. With the tight rhythm
section of Laswell and Drake, who have a long history working together in a
variety of bands and contexts, and the empathetic insanity of Patton and
Zorn, this set was as much of a surprise to the musicians as it was to the
pumped up crowd that were lucky enough to hear it that night. Although
billed as Painkiller, this once in a lifetime unit was really something completely
different. At times hilarious, exhilarating, outrageous and transcendent, this
is music only the New American Underground could create. East Coast meets
West Coast meets Midwest: New York, California and Chicago come together
in this twisted, funky improviser’s paradise.

Bill Laswell: Bass
John Zorn: Saxophone

Hamid Drake: Drums

Special Guest
Mike Patton: Voice

With Frederic Rzewski and Alvin Curran, he was a founder of Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV). He has since performed and recorded extensively, as a soloist and with jazz and classical masters including Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Carlos Zingaro, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey and Lee Konitz for labels including Wergo, Hat Art, Centaur, Victo, Moers Music, Polydor and Arista. Teitelbaum, always on the edge in musical technology, introduced the Moog synthesizer to Europe in the '60s, and in more recent years has pioneered musical work with interactive computer systems. Teitelbaum is not just an experimenter, but a virtuousic and expressive musician of the highest caliber. Golem, many years in the making, is a compositional landmark for Teitelbaum.

Based on the mystical legend, Golem is a metaphor for the mysteries of Creation, the dangers of magic and technology, the challenges of cybernetics and artificial intelligence, and even the problems of racism, violence and oppression. A multi-dimensional, multi-media "interactive opera," Golem has been described as a "dazzling labyrinth of live music with interactive computers, spinning off the theme of a soulless life-force and the threat of technology taking over in the age of virtual reality..."

A fascinating tribute, the first outside of Israel, to one of the most original and important composers of modern Jewish music, whose hits spanned over six decades, from the 1930s to the 1990s. cd time - 42:43

He has performed with Derek Bailey and Yamatsuka Eye, and is also the organizer of the monthly Tokyo performance of John Zorn's improvisational game piece, Cobra.

An accomplished film and stage actor, Makigami is an incredible vocalist and performer, employing creative and versatile techniques blending Tuuvan throat-singing (which he studied in Mongolia) and Japanese traditions with rock and avant garde. Kuchinoha, his first album for solo voice, contains nine improvisations of vocal acrobatics. No effects, no overdubs, no edits - it's creative, humorous and utterly delightful.

John Zorn : The Classic Guide To Strategy 176kbs
Cat. # 7305
Released 1996
cd time - 77:57
US Price $15.00

John Zorn's infamous solo music for saxophone and duckcalls bring together his obsessive love for cartoon music, free jazz and musique concréte in a passionate and astonishing heterophony.

The maverick composer, arranger and saxophonist first came to prominence in the early '80's as an improviser. Using self-invented techniques, bizarre effects and unusual tools, Zorn created his own personal instrumental language - instantly recognizable and still breathtaking over a decade later.

Two long-out-of-print albums from 1981 and 1985, now on CD for the first time. Two records on a single disc - you can't afford not to buy it!

"This music is both exhilarating and frightening. Although the musical ideas can be traced back to earlier recordings such as Mikhail Zoetrope and up to more recent works such as my duos with Yamantaka Eye this stuff still sounds like it's coming from outerspace." - John Zorn

"John Zorn offers us a new view of reed music; it demands our attention." - Evan Parker
