  Photoshop's little brother, Adobe Photoshop Elements ($99.99), just keeps
getting stronger, smarter, and more helpful. The program does a great job of making advanced Photoshop effects
accessible to non-professionals, while still offering sophisticated tools such as layers, masks, and color management.
Much of Photoshop's magic has trickled down to Elements, including content-aware manipulations, smart object selection,
and custom eye-popping filter effects. Even common processes such as cropping and black-and-white editing get
ease-of-use boosts in version 13. Facebook-specific tools give users a leg up on sharing to that most popular of
targets. Not messing too radically with a winning formula while adding ease to powerful image manipulation keeps
Photoshop Elements on top of the enthusiast photo editing software heap.
  
  Elements' welcome screen offers
a choice between Organize and Edit that makes the separation between the Organizer app and the actual editor clear. The
Organizer is akin to Photoshop's Adobe Bridge companion app; it's here that you import, organize, and export the photos.
The titular organizing includes face-tagging and geo-tagging with built-in maps. It also lets you add captions, star
ratings, and tags and do basic fixes such as rotation and auto-corrections. The editor can helpfully display albums
created in Organizer right in the Photo bin of thumbnails along the bottom.
  
  With version 13, Organizer
also gets a justified thumbnail view in addition to the fixed-size thumbnails, for a more appealing, modern look,
similar to that of the new Flickr home page. The full-screen view of Organizer with hide-able toolbars lets your photo
take center stage. I wish a similar view were available in the full editing app, though it does let you drag the image
view onto a second screen for a nearly unencumbered view. In general, I like Elements' clean, simple interface, which
emphasizes your images. Organizer offers four main modes—Media, People, Places, and Events. The hide-able left
panel holds your albums and disk folders.
