Forester, like his almost exact contemporary Nevil Shute (I think the two even look similar), finds his heroes in unusual places and usually in the simple man. Sometimes in the very simple man.
Charlie Alnutt in the African Queen was an illiterate Cockney, Private Dodd in Death to the French and the eponymous Brown in Brown on Resolution were simple rankers confounding superior forces to do their duty.
In The Gun however, the hero is exactly that, a thirty two pound siege gun. Abandoned by retreating Spanish forces, it is captured by guerilla forces and used against the French fortifications, changing the outcome of the Peninsula war.
The human elements serving it flit around, scheming, fighting and dying in rapid order, leaving the great bronze Gun immutable and uncaring.
All in all, much better than that annoying, but very lucrative, Hornblower of later decades.
