COVERING THE BEATLES: A (LISTENABLE) ALBUM-BY-ALBUM RECONSTRUCTION

(version 1.0 Release March 4, 2009)



Notes by elephantsmemory



This is an attempt to reconstruct the entire Beatles catalog, album by album, using only cover versions. There are 220
songs here, representing every song the Beatles released on album while active, from Love Me Do to Get Back. As a bonus,
cover versions of Free as a Bird and Real Love are also provided.



This is the initial version of an ongoing project. Eventually this will be updated with better songs, artwork, more
complete tags, and/or better quality recordings.



This should not be looked at as another haphazard grab bag of Beatle covers. Considerable effort went into hunting down
covers for songs that even the authorities claim haven't been covered. Additional effort went into the programming of
each album. The overriding principle was to make each album enjoyable to listen to, as the Beatles albums were.



There have been some other collections like this one, compiling covers album-by-album. However, most were pretty
shallow, relying on the same lame Beatle tribute albums, the Sgt. Pepper movie soundtrack, and the same familiar
grab-bags that have appeared in torrents or on blogs.



This collection is where I attempt to put some musical order into the concept; it's not good enough to have a cover of
every song, the songs have to coalesce into "albums" the way the Beatles' did. For the casual fan, I've tried
to include most of the "important" cover versions, although I retained the right to swap a "classic"
out for something else, if it made the album sound better. For the diehard fans, who are very particular in their needs,
I unearthed some extremely rare cuts that haven't been circulating, some of which may plug holes in your collections.







Here is how I approached the task of selecting the music. I had to cheat a couple of times, as noted below.



1. All songs must be cover versions. (Cheats: I used the Searchers' version of "Maggie Mae", which predates
the Beatles. Some covers of songs the Beatles covered are covers of the originals, not covers of the Beatles version
(i.e. Albert King's "Kansas City"). Also, I was unable to find *any* version of "Mr. Moonlight"
except the original, by Dr. Feelgood & the Interns.



2. Songs that were released as a single or album cut were favored over songs that were from tribute albums, except in
the case where the tribute version was drastically superior, or where the tribute version "fit" the mood of an
album better. This was done because tributes are seldom as inspired as something crafted for one's own album.



3. I tried to avoid foreign language tracks, but a few snuck on. I was torn about this. On the one hand, for some
hard-to-find titles only foreign language covers have been circulating, so a lot of similar compilations have
over-relied on them. However, the Beatles sang in English, and things do get lost in translation (just translate Komm
Gib Mir Deine Hand, and you'll see what I mean...) So, I went on daylong hunts for certain songs, just to find English
versions.



However, I left some foreign ones on. "The Night Before", "Devil in Her Heart", and "You Know
My Name" have only circulated in foreign languages, so I had no choice. "Boys" is another one I couldn't
find in English; the Flamin' Groovies did a version, but I couldn't lay my hands on it. In the case of "Your Mother
Should Know" there was a competing version from a Filipino band which was in English, except it was a medley of
non-Beatle oldies using the chorus as a theme... I went with the foreign-language one because it was truer to the theme
of covering only Beatles... In the case of "Run For Your Life" I actually do have some English versions, but
for some reason found this Chinese version charming, and decided to use it.



4. I tried to avoid genre-breaking material, but sprinkled some in here and there. I didn't want jazz versions of Beatle
songs, because the Beatles didn't play jazz. I wanted the songs to recall the originals without straying too far from
the direction of the album. There are some weird genre changes, like Yes doing "Every Little Thing" and Deep
Purple doing "Help", but I limited them, inserting them as color.



5. I tried to use material of comparable sound quality. I didn't want low fidelity live tracks marring the flow of the
album. While some live tracks are used, most are of studio-worthy fidelity, and even the worst-sounding ones sound
comparable to the albums.



6. I did try to differentiate between Revolution #1 and Revolution, I didn't bother differentiating between the Past
Masters "Across the Universe" "Get Back" and "Let It Be". I simply used two cover versions
of each, as I did with the two songs repeated on Yellow Submarine.



7. I did try to reproduce the "feel" of the albums to a certain degree, although I was limited by whatever
material was available. Earlier albums have more "beat group" cover versions, middle period albums have more
psychedelic sound, and late albums have a lot of earthier sounding covers.



8. There are a few tracks on here that are crappy, or at least not really very good. But not many. If a crappy version
was all I could find (I'm not keen on "You're Going To Lose That Girl" and "No Reply"), I went with
it.



9. I didn't use instrumentals on songs that were vocal (i.e. everything except "Flying"). However, no matter
how hard I tried, I could come up with no version for "Another Girl" except George Martin's version. I also
used "Glass Onion" by Arif Mardin, but that has a smoking guitar on it, and I figured the White Album could
use an instrumental.



10. I didn't want to repeat any artist on the same album, but the Swingle Sisters managed to get two on the White Album.
This is because their version of Revolution is clearly modeled on "Revolution 1" (as I've renamed it here),
and all the other Revoltuions weren't. And they had the first decent version of "Good Night" that I could
find.



11. If I left off your favorite Beatle cover, I'm sorry. Feel free to replace any of my tracks with some of your
own...



12. I have neither the time, the resources, or the available recordings to offer lossless sound quality. These are all
MP3, except for 3 FLAC files and 5 wma files that snuck in. 155 tracks are 192kbps or better. 58 files are 128-192. 7
files are below 128kbps, the three lowest are 96kbps. Overall the sound quality and volume are very consistent.



I would like to thank the creators of Dustbin Prophecies, The Joe Meek Project, and Rato's Tribute; I used 1 song apiece
from the first two and about a dozen from the third. Plus, thanks to an unnamed pal who supplied me with some missing
tracks.

Kenny Lynch was the first to ever cover a Beatles song, in 1963. "PS I Love You" is very difficult to find
vocal versions of. "Chains" was hard too, but Carole King (who wrote it) did this live version. This was a
problematic album to piece together, but this version holds up reasonably well to replaying.

This was also a hard album to compile. "Devil In Her Heart" is extremely tough to find; this is all I have. At
first, this had four Smithereens songs on it, but abiding by my principles, found a way to reduce them to one. The only
cut here that I wish I could replace other than "Devil In Her Heart" is the Carpenters one which sounds too
slick and 70's-ish, but it's better than the Cowsills' version, which I was using first...

The title track was a toughie... I had Peter Sellers at first, but that's not really a song, and it sounded out of
place. John Mayall's version doesn't really settle in with the rest very well, but it was the best I could do. I'm
pretty satisfied with the rest of the lineup. Finding "When I Get Home" was an ordeal; the least-covered
Lennon/McCartney song, it seems...

This was also a hard album. I had to resort to using the original "Mr. Moonlight", I could find no trace of a
cover version. "Words of Love" is a toughie, but I happened to seek out the Fireballs for another project. I
fretted about having no "Hey Hey Hey Hey", but I like King's version of "Kansas City" and didn't
feel it warranted finding one with both titles... The Cats are Dutch, and their "No Reply" is weak. However,
the rest of this album hangs together reasonably well.

"The Night Before" and "Another Girl" are a pair of under-covered gems; if you have a rock group, go
out and do 'em. The Spiders might be Japanese; I'm not sure; they struggle with their song. "I Need You" is a
minor cheat, since it is from the Concert For George. The Cowsills are corny to the point of annoyance, but the song is
fairly corny to begin with...

Three songs here ("Drive My Car", "Think For Yourself" and "What Goes On") are from the
same tribute album. The latter two titles are vey hard to find, so I was stuck (I'm not fond of the Stevens one). I kept
the Donnas because they were better than the alternatives I had. "The Word" is cheezy-groovy but at least it
is a period piece. A good "Nowhere Man" is hard to find, although Westerberg's version is good enough.
"Wait" is a jazz treatment; it was better than other versions. "Norwegian Wood" and "If I
Needed Someone" are little mini-nuggets here. The later replaced none other than Roger McGuinn. "Run For Your
Life" is a guilty pleasure.

This one is a good album. It flows pretty well, the changes in genre are similar to the original album. It's more
guitarcentric on the Lennon and Harrison tunes, like the original. "Doctor Robert" is hard to find a cover of.

I like how this one plays too. "Your Mother Should Know" is under-covered. So is "Flying" but this
is a good version. "Penny Lane" is from a 1967 concert, making it a contemporary cover; although it is a
little rough sounding (not too bad), I felt the band nailed it pretty well. "Baby You're A Rich Man" is my
favorite Beatles song, and yet one of the least-covered. I lucked out with this one, by an Australian
"supergroup"; not only did it fix a hole, it is a kickass version.

The Pepperland Suite is a new version, making it a cover version, too. For a long time, I had the Muppets doing
"All Together Now"; it was all I could find. Thankfully, at the last minute, I turned up Joy Unlimited's 1970
version. I also almost included Journey's slick version of "It's All Too Much" (a guiilty pleasure), but it
sanded off all the little feedback bursts that make the original a psychedelic classic. Hillage is a better guitarist
than the Journey guys, and he captures it right. The Gods feature several future founders of Uriah Heep.

This was tough to assemble, because of the unusual requirements of the sequencing. A lot of good versions of these songs
exist, by Booker T and George Benson, but the medleys are out of order. I didn't want to rely on the Sgt. Pepper
soudtrack ("Mean Mr. Mustard" is the only thing I used from it), or "All This and World War Two"
("Sun King" and "Polythene Pam"), but wound up grafting them both, and using the Cheap Trick medley,
which is (very) slightly murky sounding, but a pretty good version.

This was a hard one. One similar compilation I saw had four tracks from Laibach on it; I defy anyone to sit through that
version of Let It Be. Here, Laibach, who covered the whole album, is limited to just "Dig It", and the rest of
the collection is very listenable. "For You Blue", "Dig a Pony" "Maggie Mae" and
"I've Got a Feeling" are all under-covered songs.

Govt Mule is a little out of place here, but at least it is in English, and it's not your standard version of the song.
The Bee Gees appear in a version from when they were still teenagers, and it's a perfect fit for the album. I'll Get
You" is a reggaefied version, I used it to prevent using the Smithereens twice on this album. The Iguanas' "I
Feel Fine" is from 1964, and features a young Iggy Pop on vocals. The German titles weren't easy to find, and are a
little substandard, but at least they are really in German (kind of; the Punkles are Japanese singing in German...)
