When one has finished all the Hornblowers you may realize that Forester wrote better work on other subjects; Horatio does get a little bit annoying after a while. Brown on Resolution which was on the Marist Bros reading list back in the '60s, (they must have missed the premarital sex in it). Can't find an audiobook copy of that one. The Gun, (filmed as The Pride and the Passion with a totally miscast Cary Grant in '57), which I'll put up soon. And The African Queen with Bogart in the film which I'm trying to forget. (The film that is, the book is truly excellent. The final line I've stored in the memory banks for my own use.)
And Death To The French, which the Americans bowderilized into Rifleman Dodd, as if anyone worries what the French think!
You can now see where Cornwell got Rifleman Sharpe; it's almost a total lift. Still, I don't know if he ever denied it.
