Andreas Staier's performances of Schubert's last three piano sonatas - on a mid-1820s fortepiano from Schubert's time -
are outstanding performances by any standard, on any piano, "period" or modern.



In these recordings two things stand out: first, Staier's intelligent and poetic phrasing, which one comes to believe
would be artistically rewarding, regardless of the choice of instrument. Neither striving for "authentic" effects such
as hectic tempi, nor unduly wayward in its speeds, the playing effectively combines rhythmic steadiness with grace.
Second, the performances amply illustrate the advantages of using a period piano even in the works of a "late Classical"
composer such as Schubert; not only is the piano tone surprisingly full for a wood-framed instrument (Schubert died some
years before iron-frame pianos, with their bolder sonority, broke through in the marketplace), the quicker "decay" of
the fortepiano's notes produces much greater clarity compared to a modern piano, preventing rapid passagework from
sounding "soggy" and heavyweight. One movement in particular, the Andantino from D. 959, is most revelatory; this
piece's controlled chaos, sounding rawer and more frightening on Staier's instrument, makes a much stronger impression
than usual.



In sum, these performances do far more than provide a fresh look at Schubert's late works; they are musically satisfying
by any standard. Finally, I should also praise the Teldec-engineered recording, with its clarity and wide dynamic range
(which means that soft passages sound truly soft, requiring a higher volume level than usual).
