  Yogi who lives an ascetic life on Mount Kailash, as well as a householder with wife
Parvati 
  and his two children, Ganesha and Kartikeya and in fierce aspects, he is often depicted slaying 
 
demons. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga and arts.
  
  The main iconographical attributes of
Shiva are the third eye on his forehead, the snake Vasuki 
  around his neck, the crescent moon adorning, the holy
river Ganga flowing from his matted hair, 
  the trishula as his weapon and the damaru as his instrument.
 

  Shiva is usually worshiped in the aniconic form of Lingam. Temples to Lord Shiva are called 
 
shivalayam.
  
  Ipostaze ale lui Shiva
  
  Rudra, ca distrugător al universului, este energia
cosmică negativă (manifestată 
  uneori și în forme feminine, ca ipostaze ale lui Shiva sau, de
obicei, în 
  împreunarea lui cu soția sa plurinominalizată - care șade întotdeauna în
stânga 
  zeului : Sakti, zeița vieții și morții, care e totodată Kali (Cea Neagră), 
  devoratoarea lumii, sau Uma. Altă zeiță considerată ca fiind soția lui Shiva este 
  Parvati,
fiica munților Himalaya și ipostaza ei malefică, Durga, cea inaccesibilă, 
  zeița războiului
și a măcelului.
  
  Shiva, reparatorul universului distrus, este energia cosmică pozitivă,
izvorul 
  forței de reproducție și divinitatea fecundatoare, având, în această ipostază a

  fecundării universului, ca simbol principal, organul falic (lingamul), venerat și 
  astăzi ca
simbol al forței creatoare și considerat ca investit cu puteri magice, 
  fiind purtat în India
contemporană adesea ca amuletă. De altfel, în India de azi 
  sunt numeroase obeliscuri simbolizând
lingam, cărora credincioșii li se închină.
