Ira Marvin Levin, autore dei romanzi bestseller «Rosemary’s Baby» e «I ragazzi venuti dal Brasile»,
diventati film di altrettanto grande successo, è morto nel suo appartamento di Manhattan all’età di 78
anni. Il figlio Nicholas e il suo agente letterario Phyllis Westberg hanno precisato che il decesso è stato causato
da un arresto cardiaco. Benchè autore di soli sette romanzi in quarant’anni di attività, l’opera di
Levin ha però conquistato l’immaginario collettivo. Complessivamente i suoi libri hanno venduto oltre 10
milioni di copie (in italiano è stato pubblicato da Mondadori e Garzanti) grazie anche alla trasformazione in film
hollywoodiani di grande successo.
Il romanzo più famoso di Ira Levin è «Rosemary’s Baby» (1967),
una storia horror ambientata a New York con risvolti nel mondo satanico e nell’occulto. Dal libro è stato
tratto nel 1968 l’omonimo film con Mia Farrow (nella parte di Rosemary) e John Cassavetes, per la regia di Roman
Polanski. Nel 1997 Ira Levin ha pubblicato un sequel, intitolato «Il figlio di Rosemary», dedicandolo a Mia
Farrow.
Altro romanzo di notevole successo di Levin è «I ragazzi venuti dal Brasile» (1976), da cui è
stato tratto nel 1978 l’ominimo film con Lawrence Olivier e Gregory Peck nella parte di Mengele, e di cui
recentemente il regista Brett Ratuer ha annunciato l'intenzione di fare un remake.
Nato a New York il 27 agosto
1928, figlio di un industriale ebreo dei giocattoli, Ira Levin studiò all’università filosofia e
letteratura inglese, coltivando tuttavia fin da giovanissimo la passione per la narrativa. A soli 22 anni pubblicò il
suo primo racconto, «Un bacio prima di morire» (1953), un giallo con il quale vinse la sezione riservata agli
esordienti del prestigioso premio Edgar Allan Poe. Il racconto è diventato un film due volte: nel 1956 con Robert
Wagner e nel 1991 con Matt Dillon. Continuò a scrivere soggetti e sceneggiature per il teatro, la tv e il cinema.
Con il successo di «Rosemary’s Baby», nel 1967 Ira Levin decise di dedicarsi quasi esclusivamente alla
narrativa romanzesca, specializzandosi nel genere horror e nei thriller. Nel 2003 Levin ha ricevuto il premio alla
carriera conquistando il titolo di Mystery Writers of America Grand Master.
Altri suoi romanzi sono «Questo
giorno perfetto» (1970), «La fabbrica delle mogli» (1972) - diventato un film nel 1975 e di nuovo nel 2004 con
Nicole Kidman e Glenn Close - e «Sliver» (1991), da cui è stato tratto il film interpretato da Sharon Stone nel

Levin attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. At Drake, he
regularly played poker with other notables, such as Martin Erlichman and Eugene Schulman (both before and after Schulman
married Helen Glazer in 1949). In addition to attending Drake, Levin also attended the Horace Mann School, from which he
graduated, and New York University, where he majored in philosophy and English.
After college, he wrote training
films and scripts for television. The first of these was Leda’s Portrait, for Lights Out in 1951.
Levin's
first produced play was No Time for Sergeants (adapted from Mac Hyman's novel), a comedy about a hillbilly drafted into
the United States Air Force that launched the career of Andy Griffith. The play was turned into a movie in 1958, and
co-starred Nick Adams[2]. No Time for Sergeants is generally considered the precursor to Gomer Pyle, USMC.[citation
needed]
Levin's first novel, A Kiss Before Dying, was well received, earning him the 1954 Edgar Award for Best
First Novel. A Kiss Before Dying was turned into a movie twice, first in 1956, and again in 1991.
Levin's
best-known play is Deathtrap, which holds the record as the longest-running comedy-thriller on Broadway and brought
Levin his second Edgar Award. In 1982, it was made into a film starring Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine.
Levin's best-known novel is Rosemary's Baby, a horror story of modern day Satanism and other occultisms, set in
Manhattan's Upper West Side. In 1968, it was made into a film starring Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes. Ruth Gordon won
an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance. Roman Polanski, who wrote and directed the film, was
nominated for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.
Other Levin novels that were made
into films included The Boys from Brazil in 1978; The Stepford Wives in 1975 and again in 2004 and Sliver in 1993.
Currently a new version of The Boys from Brazil is in development for 2009.
In the 1990s, Levin wrote two more
bestselling novels: Sliver (1991) which became a film by Philip Noyce, the director of Patriot Games with Sharon Stone
and Tom Berenger, and Son of Rosemary (1997), the sequel to Rosemary's Baby.
Stephen King has described Ira Levin
as "the Swiss watchmaker of suspense novels, he makes what the rest of us do look like cheap watchmakers in drugstores."
Chuck Palahniuk, in Stranger Than Fiction: True Stories, calls Levin's writing "a smart, updated version of the kind of
folksy legends that cultures have always used."
