Description

 							Just before going to war-torn Afghanistan to present his new "Jericho" missile to the U.S. military,
billionaire, genius, inventor, playboy, and philanthropist Tony Stark, who has inherited the defense contractor Stark
Industries from his late father, Howard Stark, is presented the Apogee award at the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas by his
friend and military liaison, Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes, but isn't actually present as he is gambling. Instead, his
father's friend, business partner, and manager of Stark Industries, Obadiah Stane, accepts the award on Stark's behalf.
Afterwards, Tony goes back to his Malibu home with reporter Christine Everhart, where they sleep together. In the
morning, Tony's personal AI system, J.A.R.V.I.S, wakes up the reporter, who sent to leave by Tony's personal assistant,
Pepper Potts. Three hours late for the presentation, Stark and Rhodes travel to Afghanistan in Tony's private jet, while
Rhodes argues about Tony's deliberate irresponsibility. After presenting his "Jericho", Tony and his military bodyguards
are ambushed by the Afghan rebel group, the Ten Rings; afterwards, a wounded Tony is then taken prisoner.
  
 
To keep the shrapnel shell shards from entering his chest that would kill him, fellow prisoner, Yinsen, grafts an
electromagnet into Stark. Ten Rings leader Raza offers Stark freedom in exchange for building a Jericho missile for the
group, but Tony and Yinsen both agree that Raza is not going to keep his word. Secretly, Tony and Yinsen build a
powerful electric generator called an arc reactor to power Stark's electromagnet, then proceed to build a suit of armor
to be powered by the arc reactor and utilized as means of escape. Although they keep the suit hidden almost to
completion, the Ten Rings attack the workshop when they discover their intentions. Yinsen sacrifices himself to divert
them while the suit powers up. The armored Stark battles his way out of the cave to find a dying Yinsen, then in anger
burns his stolen weapons and explodes the Ten Rings' base, flying away, only to crash somewhere in the desert and
destroying the suit. After being rescued by Rhodes and greeted by a relieved Pepper, Stark announces to the press that
he's shutting down the manufacturing of weapons at Stark Industries. Also, Pepper is greeted by Agent Phil Coulson of
the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, or simply S.H.I.E.L.D., who asks that he must
debrief Tony about the circumstances of his escape. Obadiah warns Tony that the shutdown may ruin the future of Stark
Industries and his father's legacy. In his home workshop, Stark builds an improved suit, as well as a more powerful arc
reactor. Pepper then puts the old reactor in a glass showcase, which has an engraved reading: "Proof that Tony Stark has
a heart". Though Stane requests details, Tony keeps his work to his personal life.
  
  At a charity event
held by Stark Industries, which ironically, Tony is not invited to, the reporter from earlier, Christine, informs Stark
that his company's weapons, including the Jericho, were recently sold under the table to the Ten Rings and are being
used to attack Yinsen's home village, Gulmira. Stark also learns Stane is trying to replace him as head of the company.
Enraged by these revelations, Stark dons his new armor and flies to Afghanistan, where he saves Yinsen's village. While
flying home, Stark is shot at by two F-22 Raptor fighter jets. He reveals his secret identity to Rhodes over the phone
in an attempt to end the attack. Meanwhile, the Ten Rings gather the remains of Stark's prototype suit and meet with
Stane, who subdues Raza with a sonic device and has the rest of the group killed, before having a new suit reverse
engineered from the wreckage. Seeking to find any other weapons delivered to the Ten Rings, Stark sends Pepper to hack
into the company computer system from Stane's office. She discovers a threat video from the Ten Rings is translated into
that of Stane is supplying the group with Stark's weapons and has hired them to kill Stark, but the group reneged. Potts
meets with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and Phil Coulson and informs them of Obadiah's activities.
  
  Stane's
scientists cannot duplicate Stark's arc reactor, so Stane ambushes Stark at home and takes his, though Stark manages to
get to his original reactor to replace the taken one. Potts and the several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents attempt to arrest Stane,
but he dons his suit and attacks them. Stark fights Stane, but is outmatched without his new reactor to run his suit at
full capacity. Stark lures Stane atop the Stark Industries building and instructs Potts to overload the large arc
reactor there. This unleashes a massive electrical surge that causes Stane and his armor to fall into the exploding
reactor, killing him. The next day, at a press conference, Stark reveals to being the superhero the media has dubbed
"Iron Man".
  
  In a post-credits scene, S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury visits Stark at home, telling him
that Iron Man is not "the only superhero in the world", and explaining that he wants to discuss the "Avengers
Initiative".
