Der junge Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) hat ein außergewöhnliches Talent fürs Kochen. Als er sich gemeinsam mit
seinem Vater (Om Puri) und seinen beiden Geschwistern gezwungen sieht, sein Heimatland Indien zu verlassen und
nach Europa zu ziehen, landet die Familie schließlich in dem kleinen Ort Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in Südfrankreich.
Dort möchte der Papa ein indisches Restaurant eröffnen - mit Hassan als Chefkoch. Im Maison Mumbai soll den
Einheimischen die Welt der exotischen Gewürze und der raffinierten Reisgerichte nähergebracht werden. Doch als
Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) davon Wind bekommt, die Besitzerin des nahegelegenen Sternerestaurants Le Saule
Pleureur, beginnt ein erbitterter Konkurrenzkampf zwischen den beiden Lokalen. Die Auseinandersetzung nimmt eine
unterwartete Wendung, als Hassans Interesse an der französischen Haute Cuisine immer stärker wird – und er sich in
