"In 1702 Arcangelo Corelli undertook a concert tour to Naples. Invited to direct the performance of an opera by
Scarlatti as guest-concertmaster, he repeatedly hit upon the wrong note, especially during a rather exposed violin
passage the local concertmaster in turn was able to master effortlessy. In contrast to this, the Neapolitans were able
to play a honorary performance of one of Corelli's own concerti so perfectly even a prima vista, Corelli cried out full
of surprise 'Si suona, a Napoli!', roughly translating to 'They [really know how to] play [music] in Naples!' Deeply
offended, he withdrew to Rome together with the two musicians who had accompanied him as a precaution since he feared he
would not be able to find adequate accompanying musicians in Naples itself."
