  Il comandante Matt T. Sherman (Cary
Grant), deciso ad essere parte attiva nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale, riesce contro ogni previsione a rimettere in sesto
il suo sommergibile, danneggiato in rada durante un attacco aereo, grazie all'aiuto dello sveglio tenente di vascello
Nicholas Holden (Tony Curtis), che ha poca esperienza della vita militare ma è decisamente molto abile nel risolvere
situazioni ingarbugliate... soprattutto in modo poco ortodosso ed ai limiti della legge.Gli inconvenienti però sono
in agguato: prima il sommergibile deve trasportare un gruppo di soldatesse che creano scompiglio a bordo e che rovinano
una missione, poi in mancanza di altro colore devono dipingere di rosa il sommergibile e partire prima di ridipingerlo
di grigio, ed infine diventano una clinica per puerpere.
