Opera minore - e contenutisticamente, oggi, poco difendibile - del grande regista Samuel Fuller, irrimediabilmente minata da quella viscerale propaganda anticomunista che caratterizzò gran parte della produzione cinematografica hollywoodiana durante gli anni della guerra fredda. A riscattarla dalla mediocrità concorrono, in parte, l'impostazione fantapolitica della vicenda, la spettacolarità delle sequenze subacquee e la convincente interpretazione del sempre bravo Richard Widmark.
