The Royal Air Force at War - Newsreels 13-18 & 8 Airfront supplements
These cinema newsreels, known as GENs eposodes 13-18, were filmed from late 1944 onwards and include the RAF at war in Europe, the Far East and the Middle East.
Each films lasts 12-15 minutes and consists of 5-6 magazine type stories about the RAF and wartime events. The topics are varied and informative and include rare film of the Lancaster bomber dropping the Grand Slam 22,000lb (10 tonne) bomb on targets in Germany. Typical British humour creeps in here and there and the odd cartoon makes its appearance. A fascinating look at the final stages of the war in Europe and the continuing conflict against the Japanese in the Far East.
Additionally there are 8 films from the series known as the "Airfront Gen Operational Supplements" showing combat footage of various Allied aircraft types.
Finally there is the training film "Ditching without Hedging" giving advice to pilots on how to ditch their aircraft at sea in the case of an emergency. Notably this film contains some of the most wooden acting ever seen on aWW2 movie, a truly cringe worthy performance by 3 pompous hams playing the part of the RAF pilots.
These films are from the Imperial War Museum’s rare collection of original films and contain high quality B&W film of the aircraft and personnel of the period. These films are of great historical importance and are essential viewing for anyone interested in aviation history.
