Description

This is a 24-bit/44.1 kHz transcription using high-end analog equipment of Richard Strauss' Four Last Songs, performed
by Sylvia Sass with the Hungarian State Orchestra, conducted by Ervin Lukacs. It was recorded by Jeno Simon and Istvan
Berenyi in February 1981, and released originally on Hungaroton (SLPX 12397) in 1982. The recording was reissued on CD,
but that too is out of print and lamentably high prices are being asked for used copies.



This is for me *the* performance of Strauss' Four Last Songs. Ms. Sass brings a touch of Magyar fire to the intense
emotionality of Strauss' culminating achievement. The orchestral sound is a bit muddy, but it fits the sweet warmth of
Ms. Sass' soprano, and both singer and orchestra give a compelling reading of the organic rhythms of these songs. No
recording drains me emotionally like this one--not even Bernstein's performance of Das Lied von der Erde. 



The LP from which this recording was transcribed is from the high point of Hungaroton's LP pressings and is in
immaculate condition. There is no tracking distortion in the first three songs, even during the most intense vocal
passages, and only a faint edge in parts of the last song.

Audioquest LeoPard tonearm cable, PS Audio PS2 preamplifier, Kimber PBJ interconnect, M-Audio Audiophile USB A/D
converter.
