Ispirandosi al libro omonimo e all'esperienza del neurologo e scrittore Oliver Sacks, il film vorrebbe dare un quadro umano e psicologico dei disadattati. Siamo alla fine degli anni Sessanta e il dottor Sayer scopre un farmaco in grado di ridare vita concreta a malati cronici. Il caso di un quarantenne in letargo da trent'anni è al centro della storia. La sua parziale ripresa, come quella di altri pazienti, però sarà solo temporanea. Efficace l'interpretazione di Robin Williams, mentre Robert De Niro in quella del malato risulta caricato e le "smorfie" troppo spesso prendono il sopravvento. La regia è piatta, mentre la musica di Randy Newman è suggestiva. Successo di pubblico e candidatura all'Oscar per Robert De Niro.
