Background

Sor had backed the wrong side in the Spanish war and eventually fled the country where he had already established himself as one of the great virtuoso guitar players. He first of all made his home in London and then settled in the mecca of guitar music of the period, Paris.

He arrived in the capitol of France already having written successful operas, ballets, piano music as well as his immense library of guitar music. However, there were already many well established guitarists in Paris, and though he was to join their ranks, he was also forced to take up the teaching of talented amateurs and professional guitarists, and for that purpose he wrote a number of studies, the second book of his Op. 29, obviously intended for intermediate to advanced guitarists, is included on this disc.

The remainder of this discs is largely devoted to displays of virtuosity in the three wonderful Introductions and Variations on well known themes. They come from the latter years of his life, and display the complexity to which he had developed guitar composition. The disc ends with one of Sor's great exhibitions of technical accomplishment of the musician.

For those who take an interest in the technical side of recording, this disc, made in June 1995, uses the latest 20-Bit Technology for high definition sound quality.

About Jeffrey McFadden

Over the last twenty years Jeffrey McFadden has established himself as the pre-eminent Canadian guitarist of his generation. Concert engagements have taken him throughout Canada, the United States and into Europe. He has been a featured performer at several international music festivals, including Guitar ’87 and GuitarFest ’91 in Toronto, the Guitar Foundation of America Convention, Gitarren-Symposium Iserlohn, Lachine International Guitar Festival, the Columbus Guitar Symposium, the Niagara International Chamber Music Festival, the National Flute Association (USA) Convention, the Festival Mediterraneo della Chitarra, the Acadia Guitar Festival and others.

In 1992 Jeffery McFadden was awarded a Silver Medal in the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America Competition and was also a prize-winner in the 1993 Great Lakes Guitar Competition. His début recording was the first in the Laureate Series on Naxos and was released world-wide. Since its release this recording has sold in the tens of thousands of copies. His playing has received enthusiastic critical acclaim; London’s Daily Telegraph wrote “McFadden’s ability to make the guitar sing is second to none”, and Classic CD has described his playing as“major artistry”. ClassicsToday.com raved about McFadden’s recording of concert works by Napoléon Coste saying, “Jeffrey McFadden is not only an extraordinary guitarist — he’s also an inspired musician.”

Many noteworthy events have marked the past few seasons in Jeffrey McFadden’s career. He has had the opportunity to work under the great Pierre Boulez in a performance celebrating the awarding of the Glenn Gould prize to Boulez. McFadden has also been counted among the most important guitarists of his day by his inclusion in the Maurice Summerfield lexicon, The Classical Guitar, Its History and Players. More recently he formed - along with American guitarist and composer Andrew Zohn - Duo Spiritoso, which has been hailed as one of the best new guitar duos in the world.

Jeffrey McFadden has collaborated with Canada’s most prominent musicians and composers including Norbert Kraft, Robert Aitken, John Beckwith and R. Murray Shafer. He is frequently heard on CBC/Radio-Canada and NPR in the United States both as soloist and ensemble player. He has given master-classes and seminars at some of North America’s most prestigious institutions including the Université de Montréal, Conservatoire de Musique à Hull/Gatineau, University of British Colombia, Michigan State University and the Oberlin College Conservatory. He is a lecturer in guitar at the University of Toronto.
