Description: When I have bought the "Masters Of Russian Animation" DVD collection I was thinking that it will
get me into a nostalgic mood. Living in a country that was part of the Soviet Union as a child I have seen a lot of
russian cartoons and puppet films. I am also a big fan of stop motion animations. But when I watched this gem of
Sokolov, I realized that I have just seen the greatest puppet animation of my life.



The movie is based on two novels by Hans Christian Andersen (The Marsh King's Daughter and Hill Of The Elves), and it
has got the dark mood of the nordic folk tales. The story is about a ball which is organized by elves under a great
hill. They are preparing everything, then waiting for the special guests - for trolls from the northern hills. I think
it's kind of surreal when trolls and elves partying together, in fantasy tales they are often told as enemies, but in
this story they are respecting each other.



About Sokolov's work: I think this 21 minutes long short is the "Mos Eisley" of stop motion. There are lot of
breathtakingly beautiful puppets there, trolls, elves, witches, animals, even human beings. I think everyone who loves
stop motion must take a look at this masterpiece.
