Description

These are all of the extra scenes found in the

final ABC-TV broadcast of THE WRATH OF KHAN,

c.1988.  These came from a SVHS recording made

at the time by a private fan, who then

combined them with the commercial VHS release

for the best print he could get his hands on.

Only those scenes unique to the ABC print

were used.  This was done by doing a frame-by-

frame comparison of the two prints using

synched VCRs, he tells me.  So, contrary to

rumor, there was no "breathy" scene between

Kirk and Saavik in the turbolift - unless it

was used in one of the three prior broadcasts.



All scenes save one were recorded c.1988 from

a ABC-TV satellite wild feed, using a JVS

SVHS-9000 VCR.  The final extra scene was

actually recorded on a regular VHS tape during

the 1986 rebroadcast, and off of the local

ABC-TV affiliate (KATV in Little Rock, AR).

The fan didn't want to use this recording,

as there was a thunderstorm at the time and

the warning logo messed up the screen.  He

says he couldn't use the version in the 1988

recording because sunspots caused the wild

feed to go crazy at that point in the movie,

resulting in lots of line interference.  You

can see a little of this in some of the later

extra scenes.



He also tells me that the Spock-Saavik

subtitled dialogue scene used by ABC was the

same as the one that is now on the Director's

Cut DVD.  The reason some people remember a

slightly different-looking font is that ABC

resized the screen; thus, the on-screen

font got scruntched a bit.  A really bad,

pixelated, Times-style font was used in the

original VHS video releases, so this may be

what some fans are remembering.



This little bit of history should solve any

remaining questions regarding the ABC broadcast

for most fans.  It also leaves the three press

kit scenes as the only known deleted or

alternate scenes for which we do not yet have

a high-quality source.  These are, as follows:



1) Kirk and Spock's discussion about Saavik's

   Romulan heritage, taking place shortly

   after the Kobayashi Maru simulation.

2) An alternate version of "Pawns of the

   Military," during which Dr. Carol Marcus

   (Bibi Besch) drags out her dialogue.

3) Kirk's "She's learning by doing" quip after

   introducing Saavik to David Marcus, which

   happens shortly after the final bridge

   scene.
