Star Trek Nemesis.
One movie that tried and failed at making a good action/trek movie.
Lets be clear, The Wrath of Kahn is a film that the studios have been trying to replicate with little success.
I must admit, there is alot going on in this script. Like it it emulates the Wrath of Kahn for one. It turns out the first cut was around 50 minutes longer. 50 min!
So in order to obtain max movie viewings they cut out the trek part and left the action parts.
Sigh.
I would love to catch a glimpse of the original cut. With more footage of the original cast, we may have cared a bit more with this movie.
They sure fit in tons of action, homage to other trek flicks, and what was supposed to be a deep villain into the script.
I even got to catch a feeling of "balance of terror" while editing this. It's just the mood is not of "the next generation" of trek.
The villain is very violent, Troi gets raped and plays the victim, the bad dudes look like zombies, too many people die with no remorse and there are too many "blockbuster" moments written into the script. Not to mention Picard willing to ignore the prime directive at every damn turn.
Good thing Gene is no longer around. He would have fought this crap to the end. Funny how Levar Burton was dissing the new trek when he stared in this. This movie was before the new trek and is EXACTLY the same as the new trek. Action with no remorse. Action with no responsibility.
So anyway, I received a request to "hit" this flick on the strength of my Star Trek V edit.
To be clear, I went to the theater when it came out and was rolling my eyes at the end. Because I cared not for what happened.
So for this edit, I decided to approach it from Data's perspective. Because he is the most popular character. This meant including as much Data as possible. This meant the deleted scenes.
So about 80 percent of the deleted scenes are now back in. This includes a wonderful exchange between Data and Picard after the wedding.
Because we now see more of the characters, we connect more. We connect to the ones we loved for so many years.
Now the flick feels more like a proper sendoff to the series. The flick is more about change and accepting it. About when you get comfortable, change can be hard at first, but then you must move on.
Yup, this script is a retelling of the movie "The Wrath of Kahn".
