PLOT
L'azione di "Horcynus Orca" si svolge nei primi giorni dell'ottobre 1943, successivamente
all'armistizio tra il governo italiano e le forze Alleate. Il protagonista, 'Ndrja Cambrìa, marinaio della Regia
Marina, tenta di tornare a casa, a Cariddi, attraversando lo Stretto di Messina: ritroverà un paese irriconoscibile,
trasformato dalla guerra e sconvolto dall'apparizione in mare di una creatura mostruosa, l'"Orcaferone" che dà titolo
al romanzo, simbolo enigmatico della potenza ultraterrena della Morte… Pubblicato nel 1975, il libro è l'esito
di più di vent'anni di lavoro, il cui inizio può essere datato intorno al 1950. Già nel decennio successivo il
progetto dell'opera attira l'attenzione dei circoli letterari. Nel 1960 escono sulla rivista "Il Menabò" due capitoli
del romanzo, il cui titolo provvisorio è "I giorni della fera". In questo periodo l'opera risulterebbe già
conclusa nella sua struttura narrativa, ma l'autore deve ancora affrontare una profonda revisione linguistica, che si
protrae per tutti gli anni successivi, anche grazie al sostegno dell'editore Arnoldo Mondadori; il lavoro è
estremamente intenso e condotto in uno stato di quasi totale isolamento tanto che rischia di compromettere seriamente la
salute dell'autore. Infine, nel 1975, il romanzo esce col titolo definitivo di "Horcynus Orca".

In the novel
"Horcynus Orca" ("Killer Whale") the sailor 'Ndrja Cambria returns to his Sicilian home after World War II and tries to
revive his relationship with his father and former friends. He meets with only limited success, in part because of the
devastation of the war but also because of the changes time has brought about. Ultimately, he is killed by a stray
bullet from an English soldier. Events occur in the real time of four days, 4-8 October 1943. Parts 1 and 2 deal with
'Ndrja's crossing the Straits of Messina and the meeting with his dad, while part 3 focuses on the appearance of Orca, a
marine monster, and its eventual death at the hands of the fere (dolphins).
