1971. In een populair strandetablissement nabij de Toscaanse haven Livorno doet de jonge moeder Anna mee aan een schoonheidswedstrijd, die ze makkelijk wint. Haar jaloerse echtgenoot Mario is woedend om alle aandacht die ze krijgt, terwijl haar 8-jarige zoon Bruno afgeschrikt wordt door het hele gebeuren. Zijn jongere zus Valeria is de enige die van het spektakel kan genieten. De huidige tijd. Bruno krijgt een dringend bezoek van Valeria die hemvertelt dat hun moeder kanker heeft. Bruno probeert zich te onttrekken aan een terugkeer naar Livorno, maar geeft uiteindelijk toe, en het zicht op zijn slapende moeder in haar ziekenhuisbed brengt bitterzoete herinneringen naar boven.

Bruno tries to avoid a return to Livorno, but finally gives in, and the view of his sleeping mother in her hospital brings bittersweet memories.
