  In dit deel
zien we twee verhalen door elkaar lopen. Het ene gedeelte betreft flashbacks naar de periode van Vito Corleone (Robert
de Niro) en laat zien hoe Vito als negenjarige jongen van Sicilië vlucht naar de Verenigde Staten en laat zien hoe
hij zijn status als peetvader opbouwt. Het andere gedeelte borduurt verder op het eerste deel van The Godfather. Michael
Corleone (Al Pacino) is de nieuwe peetvader nadat hij zijn concurenten heeft uitgeschakeld. Hij wil zijn illegale zaken
uitbreiden naar het Westen van Amerika. Zijn zuster Connie (Talia Shire) is inmiddels gescheiden en zijn oudste broer
Fredo (John Cazale) werkt voor de familie in de wereld van het gokken en het hotelwezen. Michael krijgt niet direct wat
hij wil en maakt daardoor vijanden. Er wordt een aanslag op hem gepleegd die hij ternauwernood overleeft. Hij geeft
tijdelijk de leiding aan zijn (halfbroer) Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) en besluit zelf op onderzoek te gaan om te
achterhalen wie de verrader in de familie is. Dit onderzoek brengt hem naar Cuba waar hij met ene Hyman Roth (Lee
Strasberg), een geslepen Joodse zakenman, een deal wil sluiten. Tijdens zijn verblijf op Cuba achterhaalt hij wie de
verrader in de familie is. Bij zijn terugkomst in Amerika wacht hem een hoorzitting voor een senaatscommissie die een
onderzoek heeft ingesteld naar de mafia. Op sluwe wijze en gebruikmakend van de eer van de Itiliaanse familietraditie
weet hij een proces te voorkomen en schakelt hij zijn tegenstanders uit. 
  
  Francis Ford Coppola's
legendary continuation and sequel to his landmark 1972 film, The Godfather, parallels the young Vito Corleone's rise
with his son Michael's spiritual fall, deepening The Godfather's depiction of the dark side of the American dream. In
the early 1900s, the child Vito flees his Sicilian village for America after the local Mafia kills his family. Vito
(Robert De Niro) struggles to make a living, legally or illegally, for his wife and growing brood in Little Italy,
killing the local Black Hand Fanucci (Gastone Moschin) after he demands his customary cut of the tyro's business. With
Fanucci gone, Vito's communal stature grows, but it is his family (past and present) who matters most to him -- a
familial legacy then upended by Michael's (Al Pacino) business expansion in the 1950s. Now based in Lake Tahoe, Michael
conspires to make inroads in Las Vegas and Havana pleasure industries by any means necessary. As he realizes that allies
like Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) are trying to kill him, the increasingly paranoid Michael also discovers that his
ambition has crippled his marriage to Kay (Diane Keaton) and turned his brother, Fredo (John Cazale), against him.
Barely escaping a federal indictment, Michael turns his attention to dealing with his enemies, completing his own
corruption.
