Description

 							Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is a great movie, don't get me wrong--but it just cries out
for a purist mod. There are some things it gets very right: for instance, it includes some of the dialogue that I
thought would never make it into the movie. A great example is Gandalf's monologue about the meaning of "good
morning"--it was not only there, but handled very well. And yet, so much was added that really didn't belong.
  
  So I've tried to wrap things up a little differently where possible. I've also cut out the worst of the violence so
the movie can be enjoyed by children, much like the book (at least kids, say, 7 and up). You still see people hitting
each other with weapons, but I've removed the most explicit scenes where orcs get run through or 
  decapitated,
and so on.
  
  I've called this a provisional purist mod because the real thing needs to wait for all three
movies to be out in extended editions. A proper purist mod should be based on the extended editions, and the scenes of
the White Council should probably be moved to the third movie. The best place for it might be after Gandalf leaves the
company on the edge of Mirkwood to attend a "council of white wizards".
