It's always a pleasure to admire the gruelling efforts of Victorian explorers from the comfort of a modern sofa. Tonight
we relive the heroic attempts by 19th-century expeditions to forge a passage to Asia through the waters north of Canada,
"the most dangerous shortcut in the world". Dangerous because it meant navigating a maze of icy channels that
could be passable or lethally frozen according to the whims of the weather. One famous voyage of 1845 took a wrong turn
and ended up trapped in the Arctic wastes for six years, poor devils. The film doesn't quite follow their ordeal in real
time, but occasionally it feels like it. The story is well worth sticking with, though, as it traces the clues that have
since come to light about the fate of the venture, including a poignant fragment of written log.
