Synopsis: Tim Holt's first western release for 1952 was
Trail Guide. Tim (Holt) and his perennial saddle pal Chito Rafferty (Richard Martin) are hired to shepherd a wagon train
to Arizona. Our Heroes end up protecting the travellers from a vicious ban of land-usurpers. Halfway through the
proceedings, Tim and Chito are framed for murder and slated for a "necktie party," but things turn out in their favor.
Trail Guide introduced a new leading lady to the RKO fold, Linda Douglas. Though the Tim Holt series had once been a
cash cow for RKO, Trail Guide ended up $50,000 in the red, indication enough that the era of the "B"-western was drawing

Personal Notes: 

For John Ford fans, the opening scenes of the
wagon train are from Ford's Wagon Master (1950).

Chito is in top form as he finally meets "one women in which
he has no interest," while he juggles two other gals on the side. There's another favorite Chito moment (22:10): When
Peg Masters comments that she won't change her mind, Chito replies, "Well, you're different from the other women I
know!" And notice the skin showing on the saloon gal as she sits on Chito's lap! Not to mention the camera angle
(12:10). I wonder if that was supposed to boost the um... ratings?

Peg Masters is played by the lovely Linda
Douglas (real name Mary Jo Tarola) who was a former model and native of Portland, Oregon. Ms. Douglas also co-starred in
Holt's Target (1952), followed by one other film, Affair with a Stranger (1953). Then she disappeared from the silver
screen. I read in a Hank Greenburg biography that she didn't "relish" being an actress. As a RKO starlet, she married
theater agent Pasquale “Pat” DiCicco (former husband of heiress Gloria Vanderbilt Stokowski and the late
actress Thelma Todd) in December 1952. They divorced in 1960. She later married baseball star Hank Greenburg in 1966 and
they lived happily together until Hank's death in 1986. I wish we could have seen more of Mary Jo, there's something
about her that I find refreshingly attractive, her characters in the two Holt films vulnerable yet strong, and that
husky voice... so very sexy. 

Frank Wilcox (Mr. Brewster from the Beverly Hillbillies) appears again as
another black hat. I always get a laugh over these wonderful actors who appear in later TV series as lovable characters,
but had started out playing heavies in their earlier films. Such as Hugh Beaumont, Beaver's dad, however that's another
Holt film yet to be uploaded.

Kenneth MacDonald who plays the wagon master Wheeler, had a long and varied
film career. He had a long association with Columbia Studios, working alongside popular cowboy star Charles Starrett in
his Durango Kid series and The Three Stooges. Some may remember him as Judge Carter from the Perry Mason TV series. 

The deliciously handsome John M. Pickard, who was almost our beloved Matt Dillon from Gunsmoke but lost the role
because during screen tests he floundered in a love scene with Miss Kitty, plays the henchman Dawson. Pickard was a
graduate of the Nashville Conservatory and the model for U.S. Navy recruiting posters during WWII. Some may remember him
as Captain Shank Adams of the U. S. Cavalry from the short-lived TV Western series Boots and Saddles (1957-1958). 

Tom London, the old man with the "highly valuable performing canine," is listed in the Guinness Book of World
Records as the most prolific actor of all time. He was a very versatile actor who could play it all, from grizzled
comedy sidekick to honest sheriff to villainous heavy. He appeared in nearly all of Sunset Carson's B-westerns as
various characters, but only a few were as Sunset's sidekick. Along with Peggy Stewart, London tutored Sunset on how to
deliver his lines. (Sorry Sunset Carson fans, but me thinks he needed more lessons.) Notice the smile that plays across
Tim's face (10:00) as the old man (London) and his dog performs, or should I say in the dog's case, doesn't perform. Tom
London's most memorable character has to be as old man Pop Roberts in Gene Autry's Riders in the Sky (1949). Pop
Robert's death scene is hauntingly beautiful and extremely moving, accompanied by the rain and thunder as Autry sings
the song Ghost Riders in the Sky. Excellent film!
